To lock in the heavy-boned structure, the strong muzzle box, and the striking lynx tips, we must rely on genetics. However, the moment we begin discussing the tools required to fix those traits, we hit one of the most misunderstood concepts in the feline fancy: the Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI).
Navigating the line between preserving breed type and compromising immunological health requires objective data, not emotion. Here is a technical breakdown of the COI conundrum, the mathematics of homozygosity, and how to utilize these calculations to build a healthy, ethical legacy for your cattery.
The Science of Homozygosity
The Coefficient of Inbreeding is not simply a generic "risk score." It is a precise calculation of probability. It measures the exact likelihood that a kitten will inherit two identical alleles (versions of a gene) at a specific locus from a common ancestor on both sides of their pedigree.
Homozygosity by Descent: When COI rises, homozygosity rises. This means the genetic blueprint loses variation, and the genes become more uniform.
